Diners eating out and celebrating the Melbourne Cup shrugged off the spectre of rate rises and a gloomy economic outlook to spend up big in restaurants over the week, even as some show signs of tightening their belts and corporates demand more value for money.

Restaurateurs reported mixed trading conditions over the week as some outfits reached maximum capacity for bookings and spend-per-head, while others reported being busier than usual.
