Cabinet readies to modernise digital economy rules

A suite of regulatory reforms, including of privacy, cyber, data, identity, consumer and competition rules, is set to shake up the rules of the digital economy. The changes are the biggest regulatory reforms in more than two decades.

The year promises to be a pivotal one for the digital economy as the federal government prepares to modernise and make fit-for-purpose Australia’s creaking digital regulation and oversight regime.

Laws and rules being prepped include protections for digital identity, safeguards against scams and unfair practices, data security and management regulations, specific codes to target abuse by big tech firms controlling key social media and search platforms to impede competition, and what is anticipated to be a seminal strengthening of privacy protections.
