Budget will cool inflation and wages: Treasury head

Treasury secretary Steven Kennedy has rejected claims the federal budget will add to inflation pressures, arguing interventions to reduce energy bills will help keep a lid on prices by containing government welfare payments and wages.

But Dr Kennedy warned further government action was required to tackle “disappointing” productivity and the long-term structural budget deficit, including through spending restraint and potential future tax increases.
