Two of the most uncertain political contests of recent memory will be fought out this Saturday: a federal byelection in the inner-Melbourne seat of Batman; and the state election in South Australia.

Uncertain because they are not contests dominated or controlled by the major political parties. Uncertain because they are the best examples yet of election campaigns driven by the rising wave of distrust in our political institutions and government generaly.
