Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is holding out hope the Trans-Pacific Partnership can be revived despite Donald Trump's pledge to scrap it, as the government admits a rival Chinese proposal for a region-wide free trade area is years away.

Mr Turnbull said the US President-elect wasn't necessarily opposed to free trade but only to the TPP agreement itself, suggesting it could be tweaked.
