Washington | Counting is under way in America's referendum on Donald Trump, on a day of surging voter turnout, long queues outside polling booths and exit polls pointing to dissatisfaction with the President.

In a race that will determine whether Mr Trump's Republican Party can hold onto Congress, early counting confirms there has been a swing of support to Democrats in eastern states. However, those figures are based on small numbers of votes counted.
