The Coalition and Clive Palmer have agreed to swap preferences at the May 18 election, improving the government's chances of holding key marginal seats and boosting Mr Palmer's prospects of entering the Senate.

The Australian Financial Review understands the deal was sealed on Thursday but will not be confirmed until Monday, when Mr Palmer is expected to make an announcement.
