Sam Dastyari may represent the pointy politics of the Coalition's assault on foreign intervention in our political system. But there is a much more serious issue here that goes well beyond the Labor senator.

This is what the government calls interference on "an unprecedented scale" directed "against a range of Australian interests, from our political systems, to our commercial interests, to expatriate communities who have made Australia their home".
