Planned laws aimed at stopping foreign interference in Australia's democracy could have caught Labor Senator Sam Dastyari, when he told a Chinese businessman and donor that his phone might be bugged.

As Opposition Leader Bill Shorten came under fire for his own meeting with Huang Xiangmo, Attorney-General George Brandis said foreign interference laws to be introduced into Parliament later this week would "criminalise covert and deceptive activities" that supported intelligence collection by foreign actors.
