Labor figures are defending Bill Shorten after the Opposition Leader visited a Chinese businessman and donor months after party officials were warned he was on ASIO's radar.

Fairfax Media reported Mr Shorten visited Huang Xiangmo's Sydney mansion in March 2016 seeking money for Labor's warchest for that year's federal election campaign. Mr Huang has given hundreds of thousands of dollars to both sides of politics in recent years.
