The federal government will consider compensating taxpayers unfairly fined by the Tax Office after a report found 25 per cent of the $4 billion in penalties it issued over three years were reversed.

Finance Minister Mathias Cormann , who released the Inspector-General of Taxation’s review into Tax Office penalties, said the government would examine whether the system needed to be changed.
