Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union Victorian secretary John Setka is taking his fight against blackmail charges to the High Court as hearings in the criminal case begin in Melbourne.

Mr Setka and his deputy Shaun Reardon appeared before the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday for the start of two weeks of committal hearing, which will determine if there is enough evidence to bring the case to trial.
