The Turnbull government is confident all states and territories will fall in behind its National Energy Guarantee policy following the demise of South Australian Labor at Saturday's state election.

With federal and state energy ministers scheduled to meet on April 20 to discuss the NEG, the biggest hurdle to a consensus had been SA Labor leader Jay Weatherill who considered the scheme inadequate and was pushing the government to stick to the original and more robust policy proposal - a Clean Energy Target.
