The bullish investor sentiment that drove a record run on the local sharemarket through the December quarter could be dented by the rising number of COVID-19 cases, as states reimpose strict border and lockdown rules.

ASX futures were down 80 points, or 1.2 per cent, ahead of the open on Monday although that contract last traded on New Year's Eve.
