Australian shares sagged at the start of one of the busiest weeks of the August reporting season, as Bendigo and Adelaide Bank's result spooked bank investors and offset strong gains for retailers.
The S&P/ASX 200 index declined 0.8 per cent, or 49 points, to finish at 6076.40.
