Troops surrounded South Korea’s parliament overnight after the president declared martial law. He accused pro-North Korean forces of plotting to overthrow one of the world’s most vibrant democracies. Legislators voiced outrage and hastily voted to end the declaration in an early morning session.
President Yoon Suk Yeol spread fear and confusion through South Korea by issuing his sudden edict late on Tuesday, the first martial law declaration in more than four decades, when the country was controlled by a dictatorship.
