Why the case for an August rate rise has been overdone
The RBA missed its chance to lift rates at the end of last year. Raising them now will be much harder to explain.
Ben UdyEconomistFollowing hawkish comments from the Reserve Bank of Australia and a rise in monthly consumer price index readings over the last two months, markets are pricing in a higher probability that the central bank will lift interest rates at its meeting next week. This speculation is overblown.
To be fair, the case for raising rates remains strong. Inflation has been above the RBA’s target for nearly three years, and the labour market has been tight for a long time.
