Rod Sims casts doubt on Cannon-Brookes’ AGL bid

The head of the competition watchdog, Rod Sims, has cast doubt over Mike Cannon-Brookes and Brookfield Asset Management’s joint $5 billion bid for AGL Energy, given that the Canadian fund manager already owns transmission operator AusNet Services.

Mr Sims’ comments came ahead of his final speech at the National Press Club in Canberra on Wednesday, where he called for a host of regulatory changes. These included greater powers to tackle the tech giants. A proposal for new up-front rules is to be released early next week.
