Just as more powerful, wealthier countries were beginning to think seriously about this new coronavirus, Australia was way out in front, having already grown it.

As the new year dawned, there was chatter in the global infectious disease community about an unusual form of pneumonia in Wuhan. People were interested but no one seemed too fussed.

“The commentary rang bells for me," says Dr Mike Catton, director of the Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory, VIDRL.
