JobSeeker makes rental more affordable – for now

Access to affordable rental accommodation for many of the lowest-earning Australians has soared as a result of temporary boosts to welfare payments such as JobSeeker allowance in response to the COVID-19 health and economic crises.

The doubling last month of payments such as JobSeeker – formerly called Newstart allowance – to $1100 a fortnight vastly increased the pool of homes accessible to low-earners in the private rental market, according to the latest annual analysis of almost 70,000 rental listings by charity Anglicare.
