Big business urged to assist fire-affected communities

The Business Council of Australia says recovery from the devastating bushfires should be prioritised over securing a budget surplus, and that the private sector should play its part by waiving debts and expediting payments to small businesses.

BCA president Tim Reed said the peak body for the nation's biggest corporations had consistently advocated for the federal budget to be brought into surplus, but that these were "exceptional circumstances".
