A splintering within the Labor Right threatens to cruel shadow treasurer Chris Bowen's run at the party leadership after he confirmed he would contest the ballot against Left heavyweight Anthony Albanese.

Declaring he could reconnect Labor with voters in the suburbs and regions, Mr Bowen announced his candidacy outside the fibro home he was raised in in Smithfield in western Sydney.
