Author Anna Funder's favourite Sydney and NYC cafes for writing inspiration

I work in cafes at times in my life when I don't have an office, or if I'm travelling, or when – even if I have an office – I need company I don't have to talk to, like human muzak. I like Reuben Hills in Surry Hills and The Grounds of Alexandria – their pig, Kevin Bacon, just kills me. (Yes, really – vast pig in his own stall!)

For coffee and amazing miche bread I go to Sonoma on Glebe Point Road, but it's too small to work there and it's full of friends and neighbours. A place to work needs to be both welcoming, and also leave you utterly alone – a pretty schizoid demand, really.
