The hippy hotelier upping the ante in Bali luxury
We’re a lab for showing those greenwashing monkeys in Bali that not everybody wants to spend their holidays in a concrete shell, says John Hardy of his revamped jungle resort.
With boutiques in Hong Kong, Bali and New York, John Hardy the company makes high-end, handmade jewellery worn by celebrities including Kate Hudson and Julianne Moore.
With a grey ponytail and a wardrobe of baggy shirts and sarongs, John Hardy the man is a rich old hippy from Canada who’s lived in Bali for 49 years. He started the jewellery brand there in 1975 and sold his stake in 2007. His business interests since then have encompassed architecture and design, training and education (he founded the Green School, a holistic grade school in Bali), construction, hospitality and real estate.
