No backpackers, no Schoolies: a tropical gated community at our door

Someone asks if I am looking forward to Lord Howe Island and I say yes because I cannot say, without sounding despicably first world, that a gruelling period at work has left me so exhausted I’m not sure if I have an island break in me.

Perhaps the fact that I would rather rest my head on my desk for a few restorative minutes between meetings than visit a World Heritage‑listed island, so beautiful and biodiverse that UNESCO deems it “globally significant”, is the sign that I need one.
