Backlash against China wine tariffs hits local players

A list of 41 Australian wineries supposedly “Chinese-owned” sparked a torrent of racist emails and cancelled orders for a group already suffering from tariffs and lockdowns.

The abusive emails and phone calls began almost immediately. It was December last year and a list of 41 vineyards owned by “Chinese firms” had been posted online, in what supporters saw as retaliation for Beijing slugging tariffs as high as 218 per cent on Australian wine.

“Take your f---ing Chinese wines and f--- off out of Australia,” wrote one person to the Clare Valley’s Kilikanoon Wines.
