The history of your denim jeans may surprise you
They are made of a fabric both inherently political and deeply superficial that says so much, without even so much as a label. From the upcoming August issue, out on Friday, July 30.
Recently, a rumour began on the fashion-political circuit (a Venn diagram with more overlap than you might imagine). North Korean leader Kim Jong-un had banned the wearing of skinny jeans.
The rumour, published by the likes of the BBC and The South China Morning Post, was debunked by Seoul-based New York Times writer Choe Sang-Hun, who found that although Jong-un frequently disavows the influence of capitalist-style clothing, jeans, skinny or not, were still allowed above the 38th parallel.
