Jewellery and film go together hand in glove – or ring on finger, perhaps. There is something about celluloid’s ability to capture the dazzle of jewellery, and jewellery’s ability to shine in film that can linger long after the credits roll. Titanic’s Heart of the Ocean necklace, for example, and Holly Golightly’s Tiffany collier in Breakfast at Tiffany’s have become synonymous with the films themselves, even decades on.
So it is too with Pretty Woman, whose pièce de résistance is a diamond and ruby necklace given by Richard Gere’s Edward to Julia Roberts’ Vivian. In the film, Edward snaps the box containing the necklace shut as Vivian reaches in – an unscripted, spontaneous moment, according to lore, added to the final film due to its sheer joy.
