Brutalism on wheels: why the new BMW 740i has limited appeal

Would you pay $268,900, plus on-road costs, for a luxurious but hefty petrol limo when that very concept seems to be outdated?

What is it? The 740i is the sole petrol version of BMW’s new “seventh generation” 7-Series sedan. It looks almost identical to the all-electric i7, which is now available in 60 and M70 variants. Whatever the powertrain, this latest 7-Series is available in one wheelbase (3215mm), giving it an overall length 131mm longer than even the previous extended version. It is also wider and taller.

What does it cost? The price is $268,900, plus on-road costs, but when fitted with options that are standard in the i7, it is fairly similar in price to the EV.
