Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic had crowds (generally older) racing to the cinema last weekend. In Australia, the film took $6.74 million; in the US it equalled Top Gun: Maverick’s opening weekend with takings of $44 million.
But the movie has triggered much debate about how accurately it portrays the King and his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. Stories have questioned why the singer’s well-documented liking for very young women was not shown (other than his marriage to teenage Priscilla), or his decade-long battle with his weight.
