Why the Melbourne Art Fair is the place for start-up collectors

All you need is an open mind, says the chairman of the foundation that operates the event, which shirt-fronted a ritzy hotel group and an electric carmaker to sponsor this year’s edition.

When the curtain rises on the 18th edition of the Melbourne Art Fair this month, it will reveal a swath of new galleries and emerging artists.

The blue chips will be there, including Roslyn Oxley9, Tolarno Galleries and Dominik Mersch. But incoming director Melissa Loughnan – until recently at the helm of an indie gallery specialising in outsider art – has expanded its Young Galleries section to 19 exhibitors. That’s almost a third of the total on show.
