Music can frighten us, bore us, annoy us, distract us, or fill us with disgust. “That’s not music,” we complain, “that’s noise!” But what’s the difference – and who decides?

Some noises will set anyone’s teeth on edge, like the buzzing of a mosquito or the whining of a child. Once we call it “music,” though, consensus falls apart.
