US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a 100 per cent tariff on movies made in “foreign lands” has left Australia’s screen industry in limbo, with some calling for a local content quota on streaming services to be introduced in retaliation.
Offshore studios, mostly from Hollywood, spent $768 million making film and TV in Australia in 2023-24, according to Screen Australia’s last annual report, down 39 per cent on the previous year but still a major underpinning for an industry that employs about 30,000 people.
