Star deal crowns Sydney’s media-shy theatre king

Michael Bailey

Sydney will get its third commercial theatre big enough for major Broadway productions in 2026, although excitement at a reduction in the years-long wait to book shows into the city has been tempered by concern at the fact one man will own them all.

The sale by embattled Star Entertainment of the conference centre adjoining its Pyrmont casino to Foundation Theatres, the owner of the Sydney Lyric Theatre at the site, will add a two-storey 1550-seat theatre, a contemporary music venue with a standing capacity of 1000, and a flexible venue for theatre, cabaret, comedy and concerts for up to 550 to the venue.
