It’s late afternoon, early April, and the Kimberley landscape glides softly past our 4WD in streaks of deep red, green, pink and blue. Rocky ridges rise out of the earth, dotted with small scrubby trees, then fade back into the ground. Out of nowhere a road train blasts by with almighty force, then we’re alone on the highway again.
I'm on a four-day trip heading south from Kununurra to Warmun with Nichola Dare, owner of the Sydney gallery Aboriginal Contemporary. Dare has already travelled roughly 4000 kilometres in 36 hours by the time I join her, and is here to visit local art centres, connect with artists and buy works for her gallery.
