It was a different Australia when the Monkees touched down at Sydney Airport for the first time on September 16, 1968.
Colour TV wouldn’t reach us until 1975 so the footage is in mono, and the middle-aged Channel 7 interviewers sent to broadcast the Monkees’ arrival clearly didn’t understand Monkeemania - a phenomenon not seen since the Beatles toured Australia in 1964.
