Kronos string quartet still ‘wild and scary’ after 50 years
Violinist David Harrington formed Kronos in 1973 to make a noise like Jimi Hendrix, and on the eve of an Australian tour he’s still shaking up the classical music establishment.
If the words “string quartet” conjure for you genteel soundtracks to wedding receptions or garden parties, then you’ve never heard Kronos Quartet.
Violinist David Harrington formed Kronos in Seattle in 1973 after hearing George Crumb’s “wild and scary” Black Angels on the radio, and its anti-war avant-gardism has been an inspiration for the quartet ever since.
