Adelaide Festival joint artistic directors Rachel Healy and Neil Armfield have never deliberately programmed to a theme.

But once the festival program is printed each September, themes tend to emerge anyway, says Healy. Next month’s 2022 festival – the pair’s sixth – is no exception, with gloom-busting spectacle and COVID-inspired ingenuity abounding.
