SA to privatise operations of metro trains, trams
Key Points
- Much of the bus network in Adelaide was privatised in 2000 and the Liberal Government now wants to finish the job by outsourcing the operations of the tram and train network.
- Keolis Downer, a venture between the French transport giant Keolis, and Australian group Downer Rail already has a small bus contract in Adelaide.
- Disagreements emerged betwen the Liberals and the ALP over the impact on long-term infrastructure planning.
The transport giant which runs the tram network in Melbourne is eyeing a similar contract in Adelaide after the South Australian government revealed a proposed privatisation of the operations of its tram and trains network.
The South Australian government argued the privatisation in Adelaide won't handicap long-term infrastructure planning, although the Labor opposition warns it will limit the ability to respond to demographic shifts.
