Transport Minister Catherine King has opened the way for a new manager of landing slots at Sydney Airport, promising tougher rules if the role falls back to the Qantas-Virgin joint venture currently doing the job.

Ms King said the changes would “strengthen competitive settings” at Sydney Airport, just days after Regional Express became the second Australian airline to fold in the past three months.
