My drive to meet the American-born leader of a world-famous Australian entertainment family goes past a tired-looking motel, small industrial buildings and forests of dark-green trees. Among this Sunshine Coast hinterland scenery are signs of Steve “The Crocodile Hunter” Irwin, even if he is no longer here.
The man who attracted world-wide fame with his trademark “crikey” cry and astonishing footage of wrestling crocodiles is very much not forgotten. The road leading to his family’s tourism attraction, Australia Zoo, is named Steve Irwin Way. Steve, with his shaggy blonde hair and khaki outfit, beckons from a massive zoo billboard.
