Telstra beats Optus, TPG in launching satellite text messaging

Telstra will become the first local telecoms provider to allow customers to send and receive text messages in areas without mobile service, under its partnership with Elon Musk’s SpaceX and his Starlink satellites.

The company has launched the long-awaited technology to Samsung Galaxy S25 owners and is expected to extend the service to customers with Apple iPhones soon. The rollout is a blow to Optus and TPG Telecom, which have also been working on launching the service.
