Ariarne Titmus won the women’s 400 metres freestyle gold medal on Monday – a victory Australia last secured with Shane Gould at Munich in 1972 – after overtaking US superstar Katie Ledecky with a strong, impeccably timed finish.

Launceston-born Titmus won Australia’s second gold medal for the Games and dealt Ledecky her first-ever defeat in an individual Olympic event with a personal best and Australian and Commonwealth record swim time of 3:56.69 at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre.
