Golf Australia boss James Sutherland is leaning into the game’s new-found popularity among young fans with a festival-themed 19th hole at this year’s Australian Open complete with street food, cocktails, live music and computer golf instead of the usual stuffy dress codes and sombre crowds.

Organisers expect more than 100,000 people at Royal Melbourne across the four days of this year’s tournament, which begins on Thursday and is headlined by celebrated Irish golfer Rory McIlroy and Australian favourites Adam Scott, Cameron Smith and Min Woo Lee.
