Rugby Australia boss rejects Rebels’ tax, underfunding claims

Rugby Australia chief executive Phil Waugh has rejected assertions by the embattled Melbourne Rebels that the governing body is to blame for its debts, but says it will be difficult to provide additional funding to clubs while it deals with its financial challenges.

Senior leaders at the embattled club and its parent company, Rugby Victoria, on Thursday attempted to pin the blame for more than $15 million in unpaid debts on lower funding contributions from Rugby Australia. The claims were made in 14 pages of documents that were provided to The Australian and The Herald Sun.
