Usman Khawaja took to the pitch of the Boxing Day Test with something handwritten on his shoes, but apparently escaped any official sanction by his choice of words: the names of his children.

The words “Aisha” and “Ayla” were visible on Khawaja’s shoe when he walked out with opening batting partner David Warner on Tuesday, in another gesture in the Australian player’s challenge to international cricket officials about on-field displays of support for human rights.
