Former footballer James Johnson knew he’d inherited a basket case when he took charge of Football Federation Australia in January 2020, but things were about to get much worse: FFA, now known as Football Australia, was running out of money, fast.

The governing body’s financial woes were a combination of old and new problems. Years of fighting between football clubs and the FFA over their independence, which dated back to when the Lowy family was in charge, had damaged the value of broadcast rights. The absence of the powerful Lowy family connections and a declining audience interest had also driven millions of dollars in sponsorship away.
