The tour not only marked Australian rugby’s coming of age, it influenced the decision of the code to turn professional just over a decade later.
When the Australian rugby team landed at Heathrow this week to begin a four-Test tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland, they carried the memory of what their predecessors achieved 40 years ago.
In 1984, the Wallabies became the first Australian rugby side to complete the coveted “grand slam”, beating England (19-3), Ireland (16-9), Wales (28-9) and Scotland (37-12).
