It wasn’t until the final siren blew at the MCG last Saturday night that AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon made Sydney Swans boss Tom Harley the offer he hoped would pull the sport out of its self-inflicted crisis.
The Swans had just put an end to a woeful couple of weeks on the field, thumping Richmond by 44 points. In the moments after, Dillon would ask Harley to become his chief operating officer. It’s a role most AFL insiders believe positions the longstanding Swans boss as Dillon’s likely successor.
