When Queenslander Kimberly Birrell checked her phone after making a stunning comeback to defeat Estonian world number 32 Kaia Kanepi, she found a message from none other than reigning Australian Open women’s champion Ash Barty.

“She said ‘helluva fight’, and that just means so much coming from her,” Birrell told The Australian Financial Review on Tuesday.
